Think of it this way, return with a really hot piece of metal and stick your index finger close to, but not touching it. That is the chip and heat sink minus paste. Now touch it....

It help with roast transfer from the CPU, to the heatsink, where on earth the fans removes the bake, so your CPU doesn't burn out.
